Waterfowl Festival:

When I returned to the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge on November 18th, several impoundments had already been flooded, in order to provide welcoming habitat for overwintering waterfowl.

At least hundreds of individuals, comprising numerous waterfowl species, had already arrived. I spent most of my day observing, and attempting to photograph, some of these recent arrivals.

It was fun, but quite challenging! In general, these birds were wary and skittish, and difficult to approach closely before they took off. Nonetheless, I encountered and photographed at least nine or ten different waterfowl species!

Over the next three days, I plan to post representative images resulting from these efforts. For your viewing pleasure today, here is the first set of photographs:

Three images of American Coots; four photographs of Mallards; and three images of Ruddy Ducks.

Stay safe and have a great day!
