Aerial Combat At Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge:

I used to think that birds are delicate and gentle creatures. Wrong! Now I know better!

Included in today’s set of images from my October 5, 2020 visit to the Pee Dee National Wildlfe Refuge, are a series of photographs depicting not-so-gentle aerial combat between Red-headed Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers. I noticed that the Red-headed Woodpeckers were generally more aggressive than the Northern Flickers, and usually won the skirmishes.

I’ve also shared several additional images in this post:

Four photographs of aerial combat between Red-headed Woodpeckers & Northern Flickers; three additional images of Red-headed Woodpeckers; a pair of Northern Flickers; Eastern Bluebird & Scarlet Tanager both in flight; and a Belted Kingfisher.

Enjoy!

Stay safe and have a great day!

Northern Flicker Show:

One of my favorite North Carolina woodpeckers is the Northern Flicker. To my eye, it has an attractive combination of colors and patterns in its plumage.

I was fortunate enough to encounter several of these birds during my October 2, 2020 visit to the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge.

Today I’d like to share a few images of the Northern Flickers, who put on quite a good show for me.

Enjoy!

Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge “Red Heads”:

For me, the signature bird of the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge is the Red-headed Woodpecker. These attractive birds are abundant and easily observed at the refuge.

Today I would like to share several additional Red-headed Woodpecker images from my October 2, 2020 visit.

Enjoy!
